Automation System

The automation system that I use in my library and our whole district uses is Destiny by Follett.  This product is used for card catalog, cataloging all books and materials in the library, circulation, over due notices, and fines.  The simplicity of cataloging is a definite strength as well as it is easy to use and great for circulation and keeping track of where all material is.  A weakness that I have found is that it has a difficult fine system.  The product works well for my library because of the way Follett allows a library to organize all students and materials and makes it very easy to use in the elementary library setting with classes coming in every week.  This system produces many statistical stats for circulation, for use of specific materials.  It also gives a top 10 list of the books checked out for the whole year.  I use these reports to recommend books, and to make sure students are using the library correctly.  I would recommend evaluating the program during the school year and every summer, and I think that updates should take place every summer as I don't feel it is a good idea to upgrade during the school year for fear of losing any data.

5 Things I Would Add To A Webpage

There are many things I would add, but here are five of my top items;
1. Library Media Center Mission Statement
2. Rules and Policies for the Library Media Center
3. Online Catalog, so both students and parents can access
4. Reference Resources for all grade levels
5. New Materials and Recommended Materials with reviews
